Product Review – Pest/Fly Control

Published on Tue, 05/31/2011 - 2:46pm

Lewis Cattle Oiler. Face flies, horn flies, stable flies, mosquitoes and lice all have different life cycles with different feeding patterns. Trying to find the right pest control product for each pest is frustrating and expensive for any livestock producer, especially when you need to protect your livestock from all these different pests all year long. Sometimes even after using a one-time pest control product the pests return. This is because as the season wears on the pest population increases and the potency of the product decreases.

The Lewis Cattle Oiler provides effective yearlong control of all the major pests mentioned.  With ‘The Lewis Way’ the cost per animal is minimal and because it is a self-treating system producers eliminate the stress and time of multiple trips through a chute. Lewis distributes their oilers through many dealers in the U.S. and Canada. | 800-665-0458 | Lewis Cattle Oiler Co. Ltd. | Box 250 Oak Lake, Manitoba, Canada R0M 1P0

Cow Life Cattle Rub

Dr. Pierce White, himself a cattle producer and veterinarian, uses this product and recommends it highly to anyone who asks at his practice. The Cow Life Cattle Rub is designed to provide continuous protection from pests without spraying and dusting. Simply hang this 10 foot polyester and acrylic Cattle Rub® so cattle will go under and pour about 2-4 gallons of diesel fuel and insecticide solution along its length. Let the rub do the rest! Refill about once a month.

Leaving the rub in the pasture or lot without running your herd through a chute will save you time and money – the cows can treat themselves as long as the solution is refilled regularly. Cow Life features a polypropylene rope with a breaking strength of 2700 lbs. that runs the length of the rub. The rub measures 10 feet long by 4 inches in diameter and weighs 15 lbs. | 800-344-0115 | P H White Co. | PO Box 155 | Dyersburg, TN 38025

Terregena© balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray and Bait

Terregena© balEnce™ BioPesticide Spray for adult flies and fly larvae and Bait for adult flies provide a safe and economical alternative to chemical pesticides for fly control and are approved for use in organic production systems.  Both the balEnce™ BioPesticide Fly Spray and Bait have shown excellent results in killing flies found in the dairy environment, including house flies, horn flies, face flies and stable flies.

Terregena© balEnce™ is a naturally occurring, environmentally-friendly fungus (Beauveria bassiana) that specifically targets flies and their larvae and kills these pests in between 36 hours to five days depending on exposure and environment. This product is designed to be part of your Integrated Pest Management Program and is safe for humans, animals and beneficial insects. One 15-oz. bottle will treat 50,000 square feet for adult flies and 12,500 square feet for fly larvae. Once control is gained, you’ll only need to treat as needed.

In addition to the balEnce™ BioPesticide products, Terregena© offers beneficial insects including parasitic wasps which kill the developing fly inside the pupae before it emerges as an adult. | 919-789-0306 | Terregena Inc. | 10517 Whitestone Road | Raleigh, NC 27615

ClariFly® Larvicide

ClariFly® Larvicide from Central Life Sciences is a feed supplement designed to prevent house flies, stable flies, face flies, and horn flies from developing into breeding, biting, disease carrying adults that disrupt cow comfort. When mixed into cattle and calf feeds, as well as milk replacers, ClariFly® Larvicide passes through the digestive system and into the manure where flies breed. ClariFly® disrupts the normal molting process of the fly larvae and the production of chitin, a key component of an insect’s exoskeleton. Without a properly formed exoskeleton, the immature fly cannot survive to adulthood.

Incorporating ClariFly® Larvicide into your Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program can help decrease fly populations and increase cow comfort. ClariFly® is able to exert its effect with little risk to human health and the environment, and is therefore a great choice in fly control choice for today’s environmentally conscious producer. | 800-344-0115 | P H White Co. | PO Box 155 | Dyersburg, TN 38025
