 Lameness Prevention.

 Don't Let Them Down!

DM Co. has been in the business of concrete grooving to provide superior traction on otherwise slippery concrete floors for over 30 years. We have done safety grooving for all manner of livestock housing as well as industrial applications.
With more than 55 million square feet of dairy barn floors grooved for over 22,000 customers, DM Co. has proven that diamond patterned safety grooving works to prevent lameness. Diamond patterned safety grooving is University tested and has proven to be more effective than other traction methods.
The advent of the mechanical scraper allows for the alleys to be scraped 2-3 times daily (sometimes hourly) making a textured floor more slippery than as if without any treatment! Scabbling, milling, texturing or other surface roughening techniques are unable to hold up to constant wear as seen in figure 1.1.

Most of the original grooving we see today has only been done in one direction or “longways”. This was the only possible pattern in the past due to small narrow alleys and large cutting machines. Although we sometimes
still use these long way grooves, the new preferred method is grooving one way then crossing it; forming a diamond pattern that is proven to provide traction in all directions.
The method used to create the grooves is just as important as the pattern itself. It is common to see grooves “poured in place” when the concrete is not fully cured. This method displaces concrete, creating raised or furrowed edges which can cause major discomfort to hoofs.
Dick Meyer Co. uses diamond edged sawblades to cut the grooves into the concrete after it has cured. This gives the grooves strong square edges with flat even pads in between. The pads between the grooves are hoof friendly and provide a wear surface for scraping or other cleaning methods. The square edge of the grooves that provide the traction remains functional over the years as the floor wears down as shown in figure 1.2. In addition to these benefits, the cut grooves follow the slope of the existing floor; maintaining your floor’s natural drainage slope, allowing your floor to stay drier and cleaner.
When considering all the benefits of a grooved floor, a cut diamond pattern comes out on top in all categories. The next thing to consider is the width of your grooves.

Bedding Matters
Research has shown that when considering what type of grooving you need, your choice of bedding matters. Sand bedded barns should be diamond pattern grooved with 1⁄2” wide by 3/8” deep Grooves. In Sand bedded barns, 1⁄2” grooves provide the best traction along with the sand that fills the grooves.
In Non-Sand bedded barns we recommend 3⁄4” wide by 5/16” deep diamond pattern grooving. This groove size provides excellent traction in all directions and cleans out the best with all other bedding types.
This keeps your floors the cleanest and driest as possible. Anywhere that a cow will place her hoofs should be grooved!
Easily reap the benefits of Diamond Sawed Grooving! The process is virtually dust free, no stones or chips to damage hoofs, and requires minimal prep by you. Diamond sawed grooving is scientifically designed, time tested and proven to create a safer footing surface for hoofs.
